Challenge

Food waste often follows the same pattern: people buy ingredients, cook one or two meals, then run out of ideas. What’s left sits in the fridge until it gets tossed.

ChefAI needed to flip the usual recipe-search flow. Instead of choosing a recipe first and then realizing what’s missing, the app had to start with what a user already has and generate recipes from those ingredients. It also had to account for dietary needs, cooking skill levels, and budgets—while delivering a consistent experience across iOS and Android.

Discovery

We spent the early phase getting specific about what “useful” means for generated recipes. If a recipe is vague, ignores constraints, or depends on a long list of extra items, it doesn’t help someone make dinner tonight.

That led to a straightforward product loop we could design and build around: collect the right inputs quickly, generate an actionable recipe, then support follow-through so the app stays relevant beyond a single meal.

Approach

We designed ChefAI as a cross-platform mobile app with an AI recipe engine at the center. The daily workflow needed to be repeatable: enter ingredients, set preferences, and get recipes that fit the situation.

On the build side, we separated the React Native mobile app from backend services responsible for data, authentication, and recipe generation. This kept the app responsive and gave us room to iterate as we refined inputs, outputs, and edge cases.

Solution

We designed and built ChefAI as a cross-platform mobile application that generates recipes from the ingredients a user already has. At the core is an AI-powered recipe generation engine (via the OpenAI API) that turns pantry inputs into tailored recipes with step-by-step cooking instructions.

Key features include:

• AI Recipe Generation: Users enter available ingredients and ChefAI generates personalized recipes optimized for flavor, nutrition, and ingredient usage.
• Dietary Preferences: Filters for vegan, keto, gluten-free, common allergies, and nutritional goals so recipes match individual needs.
• Meal Planning: Weekly meal plans tailored to user preferences and budgets to support organization and reduce impulse buys.
• Smart Grocery Lists: Shopping lists generated automatically and organized by store aisles to streamline trips and avoid redundant purchases.
• Skill-Based Recipes: Difficulty levels from beginner to advanced, with technique tutorials to build confidence.
• Nutritional Tracking: Calorie counts plus macronutrient and micronutrient breakdowns for each recipe.

Technology stack:

• React Native for a consistent iOS and Android experience.
• Node.js for backend APIs, authentication, and processing.
• OpenAI API to power recipe generation based on ingredients and filters.
• PostgreSQL to store user profiles, ingredient inventories, recipe metadata, and meal plans.
• Push Notifications for reminders around meal prep, grocery shopping, and updates.

Lessons

When a product depends on generated content, the workflow matters as much as the output. Starting from ingredients (instead of inspiration) cuts decision fatigue and makes the app immediately actionable.

We also learned that generation needs follow-through. Meal planning, grocery lists, and clear instructions are what turn a promising concept into something people can rely on week after week.
