Comprehensive overview of the ARTKB project
Challenge
ARTKB is an art and design studio in Phoenix, Arizona. They needed a portfolio website that felt closer to seeing the work in person: immersive, visual, and calm. Their existing digital presence was limited and didn’t reflect the experience of the artwork.
The site also had to balance two practical needs:
- Let the work lead: strong visual impact, minimal interface noise, and layouts that never compete with the art.
- Stay easy to maintain: tools to manage exhibitions (upcoming, current, and past), keep artist profiles accurate, and handle purchase and commission inquiries without added admin burden.
Search visibility was part of the brief. ARTKB needed solid technical SEO—especially for image search—without compromising presentation.
Discovery
We defined success in plain terms: visitors should be able to browse like they’re moving through a digital gallery, and the ARTKB team should be able to publish updates without relying on a developer.
We started with content structure instead of visual effects. ARTKB’s exhibitions naturally move from upcoming to current to past, so we built the information architecture around that lifecycle. We also standardized page patterns so new shows could be added quickly without redesigning layouts each time.
Artist pages needed to do more than show a grid. Each profile had to support biographical context, a curated selection of work, and exhibition history—enough to add meaning without turning the site into a text-heavy read.
Because the site is image-led, performance and discoverability had to be designed in from the start. That shaped how we planned responsive image delivery, how galleries should load, and how to add structured data so search engines can better understand creative work and events.
Approach
We kept the project anchored to three priorities:
- Presentation: an immersive, image-first experience that keeps attention on the artwork.
- Manageability: CMS tools so ARTKB can maintain exhibitions, artist profiles, and inquiries without technical support.
- SEO and performance: image delivery and structured data that support standard search and image search visibility.
To protect the viewing experience, we made deliberate tradeoffs: fewer interface elements, repeatable templates across exhibitions and artists, and performance choices that keep large, high-quality images usable on real devices.
Solution
We designed and developed a full-bleed gallery layout where images run edge-to-edge. The interface stays quiet, and transitions are smooth and subtle—enough to support browsing without pulling focus away from the work.
For exhibitions, we built dedicated sections for upcoming, current, and past shows. Each exhibition page includes event details such as dates, venues, featured artists, and thematic descriptions. This keeps the public-facing experience clear (what’s on now, what’s next, what’s already happened) while giving ARTKB a straightforward workflow for updates.
We created individual artist profile pages with biographical information, curated portfolios, and exhibition history. This gave ARTKB a consistent way to present artists and helped visitors connect the work to the people and shows behind it.
To support sales and commissions, we implemented a contact and inquiry system with intuitive forms that route messages directly to the appropriate ARTKB team members, keeping communication prompt and organized.
On the technical side, we implemented schema.org structured data for creative works and event listings to improve search visibility. We also optimized image delivery using responsive image handling (including WebP and JPEG), paired with a lazy-loading gallery to improve performance without sacrificing visual quality.
- Laravel: backend framework supporting a robust, scalable application.
- Responsive image handling: WebP and JPEG formats optimized for different screens and resolutions.
- Lazy-loading gallery: loads off-screen images only when needed to improve performance.
- Structured data markup: schema.org for creative works and event data to support SEO and rich results.
- Custom CMS features: admin tools for exhibitions, artist profiles, and inquiries.
Results
The new site improved both engagement and day-to-day operations. Within six months of launch, online inquiries increased from an average of 2 per month to 15 per month.
Exhibition promotion improved as well: attendance saw a measured 25% increase in visitors attributable directly to digital campaigns supported by the new website.
Google image search became a meaningful acquisition channel, accounting for approximately 30% of overall visits—reflecting the impact of structured data and optimized image delivery.
Lessons
For portfolio-driven sites, visuals and engineering have to work together. A clean, full-bleed layout gives the work room to breathe, but performance fundamentals—responsive formats and lazy loading—are what make that experience feel fast and usable.
Clear structure pays off twice: it improves navigation for visitors and makes publishing easier for the team. Separating exhibitions into upcoming/current/past and pairing that with consistent artist profiles keeps content organized, while structured data helps that same content show up more effectively in search—especially when images are the primary entry point.
